Worksheet for kids unplugged coding fruit direction

Description

Students follow a simple story of going to a fruit store, where each child moves through a grid to buy a fruit. Starting from each child’s picture, they trace paths by following given directions and matching identifying features, then write the fruit name in a table.

The activity encourages careful step-by-step movement, attention to visual cues, and basic sequencing within a narrative-based challenge. It also introduces an unplugged coding concept, where each movement represents a sequence of commands that must be followed in order. Through numbered directional arrows, learners practice foundational computational thinking skills such as sequencing, rule-following, and path tracing.

Task Overview

The 9 × 7 grid represents a fruit store. Each row begins with a child in the first column, while fruits are placed across the remaining cells.

The table provides clues for each child, including a distinguishing feature and a set of directional arrows. By following these directions carefully, students identify the fruit each child buys and write the answers in the last column.

Instruction

  1. Look at the grid and read the instruction.
  2. Find each child in the first column by matching the feature in the table. Make sure you are following the correct child.
  3. Look at the direction arrows. The number tells you how many steps to move. The arrowhead shows the direction (→ right, ← left, ↑ up, ↓ down).
  4. Follow each direction in order, step by step from each child’s picture.
  5. Stop when you reach a fruit.
  6. Write the name of the fruit in the last column of the table.

Skills Practiced

  • Visual tracking: following paths and movements across the grid.
  • Visual discrimination: identifying differences in features between children.
  • Attention to detail: noticing specific features and directions.
  • Directional awareness: understanding and applying up, down, left, and right.
  • Logical thinking: determining the correct path to reach the goal.
  • Problem solving: connecting clues to find the correct answer.
  • Computational thinking: interpreting coded instructions (number + direction) and executing them step by step.
